The Cheap Speakers FINAL Show w/ DJ Brank Oh!, South of Bloor, Beth in Battle Mode, and Baby Please
Presented by: Sneaky Dee’s
Toronto’s Cheap Speakers are ending their run, one that started back in 2007. As a last goodbye to fans and friends, there will be a final show on March 21st at Sneaky Dee’s! Joining them are a reunited Beth In Battle Mode, who haven’t played in four years, the very fresh but very talented Baby Please (ex-Couriers), and longtime TWM friends South of Bloor, who are coming off a sold out release party at the Shoe. The late, great Couriers played with Dilly Dally, Modern Rivals, and many more - and 3/5′s of the band have now moved on to start a new project, Baby Please. Jangly, energetic garage pop - both myself and the Cheap Speakers instantly saw a ton of potential here. For fans of sing-along guitar tunes of the kind that bands like Stella Ella Ola have perfected lately. Over the years TWM & Cheap Speakers have broke a lot of Toronto’s best rising bands, perhaps we’ll do it one last time?
“One thing for sure, though, my 2014 has been made brighter by the return of these talented musicians. Yes, please, Baby Please!” - Quick Before It Melts

In almost a decade of putting on shows, and sharing stages with the likes of The Rural Alberta Advantage, Woodhands, and Born Ruffians, few bands defied boundaries as much as Beth In Battle Mode. These guys were a much-loved fixture of mid-00′s indie TO - “No Feeling” was a legit shit hot single of that era. At their core they’re an indie-rock/indie-pop band - but are they really? When in doubt, go to the Lonely Vagabond for an explanation: “A sound that’s almost a convergence of musical-elements, capturing that 60′s psych-garage-rock spirit, 80′s inspired synth-electro-pop, and stirring soul-drenched vocals reminiscent of late 70′s post-punk, eg, Pete Shelley. Whatever the case, the band is an intense-yet-catchy pastiche of energy, well-crafted songs, demonstrating that the retro-garage-rock sparkle is alive and well”. The Speaks’ played the last BIBM CD release … so this appearance is as fitting as it is rare. Don’t miss out.
“What I’d heard of BIBM past had made me associate them with New Wave power pop … but live there was an extra oomph to the delivery that you couldn’t hide behind a skinny tie.” - Chromewaves

Bands form, bands break up. It’s what happens in between that makes each band special. In the case of the Cheap Speakers, they didn’t just become my favourite Toronto band; they also became some of my best friends. After seven years of carrying the indie power-pop torch in TO, and rocking bills with acts like Paper Lions, The Balconies, PUP, and July Talk, the band is now coming to an end - and they are doing so at the absolute top of their game, not far removed from a successful tour and lots of future opportunities for each of them to continue their rise in the Canadian music scene. If there was one thing you could count on with the Cheap Speakers, it’s that they left every ounce they had on whatever stage they played on for every show. Just imagine what that is going to be like for the last one. There will be bands I work with closely again, there will be bands I become friends with, but there will never be another Cheap Speakers.
“Blistering, explosive rock n’ roll, with the fury of The Who and the sludge of The Velvet Underground.” - Midnight Poutine (Montreal)
South of Bloor: https://www.facebook.com/
South of Bloor were last witnessed on stage selling out the Horseshoe Tavern during the release party for their insanely well-received EP The Street. That record has since received 8000+ plays on Rdio, and stood among top new releases there for quite some time. A great, polished indie-pop / indie-rock band with a very bright future. TWM has been a fan for a while - see if they win you over too.
“These guys could be huge if they keep making music like this.” - Entertainted (Norway)
And to cap the night off: we have longtime friend and party-starting staple of the Toronto music scene, DJ Brank Oh!, closing things out with a set at the venue where he got his DJ career start! Ask anyone: it’s not a proper party at Dee’s until this man walks in.
